This selfbuild house with basement by newspaper journalist Ed Stacey was a little tricky, as the access to the plot adjacent Ed's old house was up a steep incline with the furtherest corner of the newbuild some 30 metres back from the road. Because the site was too restrictive for crane access to lower in a precast flooring system, we cast the upper floor in-situ using Metal Deck.

What our Client said:-

Thanks to the local planning office taking 6 months to approve the addition of an underground level to an existing approved design, I had ample time to research the six main ICF systems on the UK market. I choose Amvic for the strength of its internal plastic skeleton which enabled the concrete to be vibrated - not just poured - for a denser stronger structure.

It was a one of the best decisions I have made, as it brought with it B-A-G Building Contractors, and their associated architect and engineers. Chris the architect took our existing 'OK' design, and developed into something far more interesting and in line with what we wanted to achieve. Naturally the estimated cost went about 20% over my budget, and with great patience B-A-G worked through - and suggested - different options until we had the design we wanted within our budgeted cost. But how would it work out?

I write this at finished structure stage, and I am delighted with my three level, 4 bedroom house. The construction costs have come in at about 5% below budget, and the quality of the workmanship has been commended by the building control inspector. Barry's ICF team of 4 built the structure to roof level with trusses felted and battened in about 6 weeks - and I can not praise them highly enough. The craftsmanship and attention to detail were such as if it was their house they were building rather than ours.

Would I use B-A-G again or recommend them to close friends? You bet - with a glowing endorsement of how good they are!
